Corporate Policies and Standards

Freedom of Information Act

The driver, vehicle and operator agencies are part of the Department for Transport (DfT), which is a 'public authority' to which the Freedom of Information Act 2000 applies. The Freedom of Information Act aims to make information held by public authorities more accessible to the public and allows individuals and companies to request a wide variety of material.

The DfT website will give you further information on Freedom of Information, how it is administered in the Department for Transport and its Agencies, and how to make an electronic application for information kept by the central agency. You can also apply direct to one of the driver, vehicle and operator agencies. Contact details can be found on the links below:

Publication Scheme

The DfT Publications DatabaseLinks to another website. details all categories of information that the Department and its agencies publish (at present and in the future), and explains how to obtain that information. It also makes it clear whether the information is available free of charge or on payment. For people who need information in alternative formats, we will take all reasonable steps to make the material available.

Investors in People

The Investors in People (IiP) national standard, introduced in 1991, is aimed at encouraging companies to invest in their workforce. IiP is a quality award that provides a framework for employers to develop their people and to structure their training and development activity as a business investment. The standard has 4 key principles: commitment; Action, Planning; and, Evaluation. To achieve accreditation against the standard organisations have to prove not only that they meet each element, but that there is a continuous will to improve their development practices and techniques.

Charter Mark

Charter Mark and Service First InitiativeLinks to another website. is a major part of Government's drive to modernise public services. It is unique amongst quality schemes because your organisation is judged on results - the service the customer actually receives. It shows that you put customers first, it demonstrates to people - both your customers and people in other organisations - just how high standards in the public service can be.

Crystal Mark

Crystal Mark is the Plain English Campaigns internationally recognised symbol of clarity, encouraging organisations to communicate clearly. It applies to a document and shows that it can be read, understood and acted upon by the intended audience. The Department for Transport supports the Plain English Campaign and adopts the standard throughout its communication process.

Agency Policies

Due to their differing roles within the Department for Transport, each executive agency has more specialised corporate policies. To examine these follow the links below:
