Becoming a motorcycle instructor

Setting up an Approved Training Body ATB)

To obtain a starter pack which contains information on how to set up an ATB please contact the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) Section. Please note that every ATB must have at least one certified instructor who has passed the Cardington CBT assessment, this does not have to be the person who holds the authority.

Certified motorcycle instructor

The procedure and criteria for becoming a certified motorcycle instructor are as follows:

• you must be over 21 years of age

• you must have held a full British motorcycle licence (Category A) for a period of not less than three years

• you must be considered a ‘fit & proper’ person in respect of convictions motoring or non-motoring

Generally instructors initially join an existing training body to become ‘down trained instructors’. When they are sufficiently experienced most will then attend the Driving Standards Agency’s (DSA) training establishment in order to gain the Cardington assessment and then to become Direct Access (DAS) qualified.

Details of Approved Training Bodies in your area can be obtained from the Find my nearest Approved Training BodyLinks to another website. service or by emailing the CBT section.
