Booking an instructor theory test
The Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) part one test can only be taken after:
- your application for registration as an approved driving instructor has been processed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA)
- the ‘fit and proper’ checks have been completed
- you have received written confirmation from the Registrar to proceed
How to book a theory test
To book a theory test you will need:
• a valid UK driving licence number or community licence
• an ADI personal reference number
• a valid debit or credit card for payment (Visa, Mastercard, Delta, Visa Electron, Switch/Maestro and Solo cards are accepted)

You can book a theory test over the phone on 0300 200 1122, from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm, Monday to Friday, except on Bank Holidays.

Following connection to the national booking line number, the fast track option **41 can be used to by-pass the recorded messages.
Booking a theory test by post
To book a theory test by post you will need an application form. Application forms are available on request from the Driving Standards Agency booking line.
Payment can be made by cheque or postal order, but cash payments are not accepted. Postal orders and cheques should be made payable to the Driving Standards Agency and should have your driving licence number and ADI personal reference number written on the back.
If you want to book a theory test using an application form you should send the completed form along with a cheque or postal order to the address given on the application form.
